VCHT celebration dinner/ Cena de celebración del Fideicomiso, Feb 4, 2015

Dear Members and Friends

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support of the Vieques Conservation and Historical Trust. Thanks to members like you, we had an excellent year, moving forward on several fronts.

As you are a friend and supporter of the Trust, I would like to invite you to join us as we celebrate our landmark 30th anniversary at an exceptional Black Pearl Anniversary dinner to be held Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at El Blok. Seating will be limited to 80 people and will feature a uniquely Viequense menu specially designed by award winning Chef José Enrique. He will be preparing five courses, expertly paired with four fine wines. A very special Benefactors cocktail party will be held on El Blok’s roof terrace at 5pm, prior to the dinner.

Our 30th anniversary is truly a cause for celebration. During this past year the VCHT completed important accomplishments in the conservation of this Island’s resources, and in providing sound environmental education to Viequense children and youth.

At the beginning of the year we investigated the causes and possible remedies for loss of bioluminescence in the BioBay with scientists and government agencies, and have continued (as we have always been) actively participating in its management and conservation.

In a joint project between VCHT, the USGS, the Puerto Rico Environmental Quality Board and the Puerto Rico Department of Natural Resources, a real-time water quality monitoring station was installed in the BioBay that collects data on water quality parameters. Powered by solar energy, the station transmits its data through the internet making it available to the whole world.

We completed a project to reduce the erosion and sedimentation of the BioBay through the use of green infrastructure. Improvements were also made to visitor and tour providers’ access, including a world-class glow-in-the-dark pedestrian walkway for nighttime safety that is a prelude for visitors to the wonders they will find in the bay. The project, managed by the VCHT and financed by DNER, EPA, the Municipality of Vieques and with in-kind support from the US Fish and Wildlife Service, at a total cost of over half a million dollars, has greatly reduced sedimentation and turbidity in the bay.

Over 200 children took part this year in MANTA, MANTASTIC, MANTA Costas, the Trust’s award-winning environmental education program for children and youth.

Fifteen deserving Viequense students are currently being funded in their quest for a better future through VCHT’s scholarship program.

2015 marks the Trust’s 30th year. This is a huge milestone in VCHT’s ongoing mission to foster, study, educate, protect and conserve the environmental, archaeological and cultural resources of Vieques. We could not have made it to this point without you and the Trust appreciates and needs your help to ensure the expansion and continuation of our important environmental and educational programs.  I am emailing you in advance of the general membership to ensure that, as a past donor, you have priority for supporting this outstanding event. Please let me know by January 24th if you will be joining us as a Benefactor for our Black Pearl Anniversary.

Ticket prices for Benefactors are $500 per person and include the special rooftop cocktail party. Ticket prices for the dinner are $150 per person.

Tickets and reservations will be available at the Trust, Monday thru Friday, from 10am until 4pm. Tickets may be purchased in person or by phone.
